Chantenay
Carrots
As
founder members of Fresh Growers, we were approached by one of the
major supermarkets in 1998 to supply a better tasting traditional
carrot. Since the initial production of 10 acres, we now supply
most of the majors as well as food service and wholesale markets.
Howards
currently grow 800 acres of Chantenay and are supplying approx 90%
of the UK requirement. Additional acreage is planned for the 2009
season and we are looking for further sand land with full irrigation
to enable us to sustain this expansion.
We
are primarily looking for land capable of over-wintering carrots
under straw, and generally propose a two-year agreement. The crop
is drilled in May into a de-stoned bed. In October, if the quality
is good enough, the carrots are covered with straw. Harvesting will
then take place between January and May. The straw will be incorporated
to leave the land in very good condition for subsequent crops.
Salad Potatoes
We are currently growing 400 acres of Maris Peer salad potatoes that are all washed, graded and packed by Fresh Growers. They are primarily sold under our own 'Mint' brand. We require eel-worm free sand land with irrigation.
Crops
are produced under agreements to suit both parties, from straight
rentals to share crop arrangements. Self propelled harvesters with bunkers are used for both crops to avoid running on the land with heavy trailers.
